Provenance

Where it came from

The Earwig Squad was introduced in the Morningtide expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in early 2008. As the second set in the Lorwyn block, Morningtide focused on the tribes established in the previous set, specifically highlighting the 'prowl' mechanic which rewarded players for playing creatures that shared a creature type with those already on the battlefield. The Earwig Squad, a rogue creature, was designed to leverage this mechanic to disrupt opponent strategies by searching their library and exiling key cards.

The card’s artwork was rendered by Warren Mahy, a frequent contributor to the game who is known for his distinct, expressive fantasy style. Mahy’s illustration depicts the squad as a group of diminutive yet menacing rogues, emphasizing their lore as sneaky, opportunistic operatives within the fairy-tale-inspired world of Lorwyn. Upon release, the card was received as a potent tactical tool in tournament play, particularly for its ability to dismantle combo decks, solidifying its place as a staple rare in the tribal-focused environments of the era.
