Where it came from
Crescendo of War was originally introduced in the 2011 Commander expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a red enchantment, it reflects the game's focus on multiplayer dynamics by incentivizing combat through the accumulation of fate counters, which progressively increase the power of attacking creatures. The card was intended to force action in stalled game states, effectively speeding up the pace of play and rewarding players who commit to aggressive strategies.
The card was later included in 'The List,' a curated selection of reprints integrated into Set Boosters starting in 2020. This initiative allowed players to encounter cards from Magic's long history in modern packaging, keeping older, utility-focused designs accessible for casual and Commander formats. The illustration by Dave Kendall leans into the chaotic, militaristic flavor of the red color identity, depicting a frenzied battlefield that aligns with the card’s mechanical goal of escalating conflict.
