Where it came from
Cheering Fanatic was originally printed in the Unstable set for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in December 2017. As part of the 'Un-' series, the card was designed to break the traditional rules of the game, featuring silver-bordered aesthetics that signaled its status as a novelty or 'joke' card meant for casual, high-variance play rather than standard competitive formats.
The card was illustrated by David Palumbo, who captured the chaotic, high-energy essence of an arena spectator. It gained a second life through The List, a curated selection of cards from throughout Magic’s history that are randomly inserted into modern booster packs. This inclusion allowed players to pull the card in legal play environments, though its ability to modify the power and toughness of creatures based on the 'cheering' of outside spectators remains a distinctive, meta-textual design choice.
