Provenance

Where it came from

The Crimson Manticore was released in 1995 as part of the Fourth Edition core set for Magic: The Gathering. This set served as a landmark in the game’s history, acting as the first base set to transition away from the original limited print runs of Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited, thereby standardizing the card borders and frame styles for the growing player base.

The illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was a frequent contributor to the game’s earliest sets. His design for the Manticore reflects the visceral, hand-drawn fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the era. The card was intended to provide a mid-range red creature with a flying ability, fitting into the aggressive tempo-based strategies common in the mid-nineties meta.
