Stream of Life was originally released in the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, later appearing in the Fourth Edition base set in 1995. As a foundational green sorcery card, its purpose was to provide players with a straightforward life-gain mechanic, reflecting the color's thematic connection to nature and vitality. The Fourth Edition printing served as a wider distribution to satisfy the growing player base during the early years of Magic: The Gathering.

The artwork for this version was provided by Mark Poole, a prolific early contributor to the game's aesthetic. Poole's illustration captures the ethereal, flowing essence of nature, consistent with the high-fantasy illustrative style that defined the game's initial visual identity.
