Where it came from
Crossway Troublemakers was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Crimson Vow Commander set, a supplemental product designed to accompany the main Crimson Vow expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was crafted to fit the Gothic horror aesthetic of the plane, specifically tapping into the set's thematic focus on vampire weddings and the chaotic revelry of the night. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'go-wide' red-black playstyle common in Commander, rewarding players for deploying aggressive creatures that benefit from being played in sequence.
The card's illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has been a staple of the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic for many years. His design for the piece emphasizes the rugged, dangerous spirit of the Innistrad setting, utilizing deep shadows and dynamic lighting to capture the titular troublemakers in a moment of kinetic movement. Within the community, the card is recognized for its utility in limited Commander deck builds, valued primarily for its specific synergy with aggressive creature-based strategies rather than its rarity.
