Provenance

Where it came from

Cruel Edict was originally printed in the Stronghold expansion in 1998, but the Ninth Edition printing released in 2005 marked a significant moment in the game's history as part of the core set transition. Designed as a cornerstone of black control strategies, the card forces an opponent to sacrifice a creature, providing a powerful answer to singular, high-threat units regardless of protective abilities like shroud or regeneration.

This version features artwork by Michael Sutfin, whose distinct, dark aesthetic defined much of the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering during the mid-2000s. Sutfin’s rendering of the Edict captures the grim, inescapable nature of the spell, moving away from more literal interpretations to a more stylized, atmospheric portrayal that became a signature look for the Ninth Edition's uncommon tier cards.
