Where it came from
Cruel Edict first appeared in the Portal set in 1997, designed to introduce players to the mechanics of forcing an opponent to sacrifice a creature. By the time it was reprinted in the Tenth Edition core set in 2007, it had become a foundational tool in black-aligned control decks, prized for its ability to bypass protection from black or hexproof-style effects that traditional targeted removal could not touch.
The Tenth Edition printing features artwork by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more visceral original illustrations to provide a cleaner, more iconic representation of the spell. The set itself was notable as the final core set to utilize the classic card frame, and Staples’ work captures the grim, atmospheric aesthetic that defined the card's role as a staple of competitive and casual play throughout the late 2000s.
