Where it came from
Cruel Sadist is a creature card that first appeared in the Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2015, later being reprinted with updated artwork in the Jumpstart 2022 release as collector number 391. Designed to function as a repeatable removal tool, the card emphasizes the black-mana color identity’s reliance on sacrificing resources to exert control over the battlefield, capturing the archetype of a methodical, high-risk practitioner of dark magic.
The 2022 edition features striking, evocative illustration by artist Livia Prima. Her work for the set was intended to modernize the aesthetic of the character while maintaining its thematic resonance with classic necromantic tropes. Upon its release in the Jumpstart product line, the card was received primarily as a functional utility piece for limited formats, valued by players for its ability to grow in power while proactively answering threats.
