Where it came from
Wildborn Preserver was originally introduced in the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019, designed to showcase the set's fairy-tale aesthetic and the reach mechanic. It was reprinted as card number 738 in the Jumpstart 2022 release, which was curated to provide a high-energy, accessible play experience by pairing two thematically distinct mini-decks together. The card’s design, featuring art by Magali Villeneuve, emphasizes the green color identity's focus on creature growth and protection, fitting perfectly into the set's goal of enabling synergistic gameplay.
The artistic direction for this piece centers on the ethereal, forest-bound nature of the card's namesake. Magali Villeneuve is widely recognized in the community for her ability to blend high-fantasy elements with a sense of fluid movement, and her work on the Preserver was praised for its visual cohesion with the broader Eldraine aesthetic. By the time it arrived in Jumpstart 2022, the card had already established itself as a staple for green-based aggressive decks, appreciated by players for its efficiency and late-game utility.
