Where it came from
Crushing Canopy was released in the 2020 Jumpstart set for Magic: The Gathering, a product specifically designed to introduce players to the game through ready-to-play, randomized themes. The card itself functions as a versatile removal spell, allowing players to deal with either flying creatures or non-creature artifacts and enchantments, a staple utility effect in green card design intended to provide flexibility in a high-variance format.
The illustration by Dimitar Marinski captures the card's theme of nature reclaiming man-made structures, portraying a dense, vibrant jungle overgrowth breaking through stone masonry. Marinski's art style for this piece emphasizes the raw power of the natural world, aligning with the mechanical identity of green-aligned cards in Magic: The Gathering, which often focus on the triumph of the wild over artificial constructs.
