Provenance

Where it came from

The Crypt Angel card appearing in the 2001 World Championship Decks was part of a special release that replicated the exact sixty-card decks used by finalists at the Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks were printed with gold-bordered backs and signatures on the face of the cards, serving as a commemorative tool for players to study the competitive meta-game and strategies employed by top-tier professionals during the tournament circuit.

Originally illustrated by Greg Staples, Crypt Angel debuted in the Invasion expansion set. The design features a dark, ethereal aesthetic consistent with the set's themes of multidimensional conflict and mechanical invasion. When repurposed for the 2001 World Championship release, the card retained its original artwork but was clearly distinguished from tournament-legal cards by its unique border, making it a distinct historical artifact of professional play from that era.
