Where it came from
The Cryptek card was released as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering, which launched in October 2022 as a collaborative project between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. This set was designed to integrate the dark, gothic science-fiction aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanical framework of the Commander format, with the Necron Dynasty deck featuring the Cryptek as a vital piece of engine-building support.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who focused on capturing the cold, mechanical menace inherent to the Necron race. By emphasizing the glowing green energy conduits and the skeletal, robotic physiology of the Cryptek, the design successfully bridges the visual language of the tabletop wargame with the established art style of Magic: The Gathering, earning praise from players for its thematic accuracy.
