Where it came from
The Cryptek card was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was produced through a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to bring the dark, gothic science-fiction aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of Magic. The card features art depicting a Necron Cryptek, a central figure in the lore known for manipulating reality through advanced, ancient technology.
The illustration, created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, captures the cold, mechanical menace characteristic of the Necron faction. Manzanedo utilized the harsh lighting and stark, metallic color palettes common to the Warhammer franchise to emphasize the character's detached, god-like technological power. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to synergize with artifact-heavy decks, fitting both thematic expectations and functional gameplay needs within the commander format.
