Where it came from
The Cryptex card was released in 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a top-down artifact representation of a classic puzzle lock, it reflects the expansion's focus on mystery and detective tropes set within the plane of Ravnica. The card was featured as a promo variant, often distributed through specialized event packs to highlight the set's thematic mechanical depth.
The design draws heavily from historical mechanical encryption devices, aestheticized to fit the gothic-industrial visual language of the Karlov Manor environment. Illustrators working on this set aimed to evoke a sense of tactile intrigue, balancing functional card text with evocative art. Upon release, it was received as a niche utility piece for Commander players, noted for its ability to provide both mana filtering and graveyard-related card draw, solidifying its place in decks centered on artifact synergy.
