Provenance

Where it came from

The Crystal Rod card was released as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1993. As the second print run of the game, Beta was intended to address the explosive demand following the initial Alpha release while correcting a number of minor printing errors found in the first batch of cards. It remains a cornerstone of the game's early history, representing the foundational period when Richard Garfield's design concepts were first finding their global audience.

The card belongs to a cycle of five artifacts known as the 'rods,' each designed to gain players life when a specific color of spell was cast. Illustrated by artist Anson Maddocks, the artwork features the minimalist, gothic aesthetic that defined the game's early identity. While the Crystal Rod is mechanically regarded today as a niche utility card, its design reflects the experimental nature of early set development, where individual cards were crafted to explore specific mechanical interactions within the nascent color wheel.
