Where it came from
Culmination of Studies was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card tied to the Izzet-aligned Prismari college, it reflects the set's focus on instant and sorcery spells and the thematic pursuit of artistic perfection through magical expression. This specific version is a promotional variant, designed to showcase the unique aesthetic of the Strixhaven plane where students and faculty gather to study ancient spells and manifest their creative vision.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is known for blending ethereal light with intricate magical effects. Voss aimed to capture the essence of a 'culmination'—a moment where intense research and raw arcane energy converge into a single, overwhelming spell. The piece was well-received by players for its dynamic composition and its role in rewarding decks that manage to cast a high volume of spells in a single turn, fitting perfectly into the high-energy gameplay style encouraged by the Prismari college.
