Where it came from
Blot Out the Sky was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set in 2021, representing the powerful magical traditions of the Silverquill College. The card embodies the essence of the school's focus on ink-based magic and the manipulation of words as a weapon, manifesting as a sweeping board wipe that leaves behind avatars of shadow and ink. This promotional version, designated by the 'p' suffix, features distinct art that differentiates it from the standard set release, emphasizing the gothic, academic aesthetic of the institution.
The artwork for this piece was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of modern Magic: The Gathering. Prima's design for Blot Out the Sky captures the swirling, atmospheric intensity of a storm of sentient ink, reflecting the card's function as a total battlefield reset. Upon its release, the card was received as a high-impact control tool in various formats, noted by players for its scalability and its thematic resonance with the Strixhaven narrative of dueling mages.
