Where it came from
Cunning Evasion was released in 2017 as part of the Modern Horizons set, a collection specifically designed for the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast developed this set to introduce new cards directly into the Modern ecosystem without requiring them to pass through a standard-set release, allowing for more complex mechanics and nostalgic themes to emerge as part of the game's evolving history.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a clean, atmospheric style to capture the essence of a rogue vanishing into shadows. By providing a repeatable way to return creatures to a player's hand, the design focuses on tactical utility and evasion, a mechanic that has become a staple for players looking to reuse 'enter the battlefield' effects or protect key pieces from removal spells.
