Where it came from
Deep Forest Hermit was released in the 2019 set Modern Horizons, a groundbreaking expansion designed specifically for the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on bringing new cards directly into the format while paying homage to the history of the game through mechanical callbacks. As a creature that enters the battlefield and immediately generates a swarm of Squirrel tokens, the Hermit serves as a direct, color-shifted, and refined tribute to Deranged Hermit, a powerful card from the 1999 Urza's Destiny set that had long been a fan favorite for its unique tribal synergy.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the quintessential aesthetic of a reclusive forest dweller surrounded by his woodland companions. The design intent was to provide green-aligned decks with a resilient, high-value creature capable of gumming up the board state and pressuring opponents through sheer numbers. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players looking to build 'Squirrel tribal' decks or competitive midrange lists, landing securely in the lineage of iconic green creatures that reward players for investing in creature-based strategies.
