Where it came from
Cunning Rhetoric was released in 2023 as part of the Commander Masters set, a collection specifically curated for the popular Commander format in Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the 'political' playstyle inherent to multiplayer formats, functioning as a deterrent by penalizing opponents for attacking the controller or their planeswalkers. It draws upon long-standing design principles within the game that use tax-like mechanics to discourage aggressive maneuvers.
The illustration for Cunning Rhetoric was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. His work for the set leaned into the regal and manipulative aesthetic associated with the card's theme of psychological maneuvering. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional and flavorful inclusion for decks focused on group-hug or defensive pillow-fort strategies, as it incentivizes opponents to seek easier targets while providing the controller with consistent card advantage.
