Where it came from
Ornithopter of Paradise was first introduced in the Modern Horizons 2 set in 2021 before being reprinted as part of the Commander Masters expansion in 2023. It serves as a color-fixing creature, drawing thematic inspiration from the original Ornithopter artifact creature while mechanically reimagining it as a mana-producing bird. The design aims to provide players with a versatile, low-cost utility creature that fits into various green-inclusive decks, bridging the gap between historical Magic: The Gathering tropes and modern card utility.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who utilized a vibrant, ethereal aesthetic to emphasize the creature's connection to nature and mana generation. By depicting the ornithopter with organic, bird-like wings rather than traditional mechanical ones, the design successfully signals its role as a mana dork within the game's ecosystem. Upon its release, the card was widely received as an efficient, staple-level addition for the Commander format, praised for both its reliability and the clean, evocative nature of its artwork.
