Where it came from
Cunning Wish was originally released in the 2002 expansion Judgment as part of the Odyssey block. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering R&D team, the card was created as a cornerstone of the 'Wish' cycle, providing players with the unique mechanical ability to retrieve cards from their sideboard during a game, thereby expanding the player's strategic toolbox mid-match.
The Mystery Booster 2 version features the iconic illustration by Greg Staples, whose work captures the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of early 2000s Magic art. Upon its debut, the card was widely received by competitive players as a powerful utility tool for control decks, and its inclusion in the curated Mystery Booster 2 set serves as a nod to its historical impact on the game's competitive format.
