Where it came from
The Curious Altisaur was released in 2023 as part of the 'Veloci-Ramp-TOR' Commander deck for the Magic: The Gathering expansion The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The set focuses on the plane of Ixalan, a world defined by its prehistoric aesthetic featuring dinosaurs, pirates, and ancient Mesoamerican-inspired civilizations. This card specifically embodies the set's mechanical emphasis on the 'Discover' keyword, rewarding players for deploying large creatures.
The artwork was illustrated by Games Workshop artist Anna Christenson, who sought to capture the inquisitive yet formidable nature of the dinosaur. The design leans into the high-fantasy interpretation of late-Cretaceous life that defines the Ixalan aesthetic, balancing biological detail with the vibrant, magical energy of the setting. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency in dinosaur-themed tribal strategies, quickly becoming a staple for Commander decks focused on creature-based card advantage.
