Provenance

Where it came from

Curse of Disturbance originated as part of the Commander 2017 expansion, specifically within the Draconic Domination deck, before being reprinted in the 2022 Starter Commander Decks. It was designed as an Aura Curse, a card type created to enchant a specific player and affect their interactions with all other participants in a multiplayer game. The design goal was to incentivize combat, rewarding players for attacking the enchanted opponent with the creation of Zombie creature tokens, thereby creating a 'must-attack' target that shifts the political landscape of a Commander table.

The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the decaying, atmospheric aesthetic typical of Magic: The Gathering’s darker themes. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to function as a low-cost political tool that accelerates game states without requiring a significant mana investment. It remains a staple in casual multiplayer environments due to its clear, direct mechanical incentive for aggressive play.
