Where it came from
Sejiri Refuge was originally introduced in the Zendikar expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2009. Designed as part of a cycle of allied-color dual lands, the card represents the landscape of the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile environment and ancient, hidden mysteries. Mechanically, it provides players with a way to stabilize their life totals while offering flexibility in mana production, reflecting the theme of survival within the perilous wilds of its home plane.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who captured the serene yet imposing nature of the Sejiri Steppe. Velinov’s design emphasizes the icy, expansive geography that serves as a sanctuary for those brave enough to navigate the harsh Zendikar terrain. While this specific iteration appeared in the Starter Commander Decks, the card remains a well-recognized fixture in casual play, celebrated by the community for its utilitarian role in supporting multi-color deck archetypes.
