Where it came from
Curtains' Call was released in 2016 as part of the Commander 2016 expansion, a set specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. Published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was notable for introducing four-color legendary creatures and mechanics that encouraged political interaction among players. The card serves as a thematic removal spell, utilizing the 'undaunted' mechanic to become cheaper to cast based on the number of opponents, reflecting the chaos and shifting alliances typical of a four-player game.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. Voss crafted an image that leans into the dramatic, theatrical aesthetic implied by the card's name, capturing a sense of finality and stagecraft. The design was well-received for its mechanical utility in a multiplayer setting, providing players with an efficient, scaling answer to problematic board states that rewards the caster for navigating the social dynamics of the table.
