Provenance

Where it came from

Custodian of the Trove was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored the final timeline of the Tarkir block, focusing on a world reshaped by dragon supremacy. The card reflects the set's thematic preoccupation with draconic hoarding and the immense, ancient power structures that defined the plane's lore.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic community known for his expressive and atmospheric style. Voss designed the piece to emphasize the immense scale of the custodian—a gargantuan creature tasked with protecting treasures of great historical weight. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche functional piece, often noted by players for its defensive utility in limited formats.
