Where it came from
Custodi Lich was released in 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Conspiracy: Take the Crown. This set was designed specifically for multiplayer drafting formats, focusing on political intrigue and social gameplay mechanics. The card represents a recurring theme of the Custodi, a faction within the lore of the plane of Fiora, known for their role as the religious keepers of the High City of Paliano.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrative artist Nils Hamm, whose work often features an ethereal, dark fantasy aesthetic. Hamm aimed to capture the decaying nobility and supernatural corruption associated with the lich archetype while maintaining the regal, oppressive atmosphere characteristic of Fiora's political elite. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its unique mechanics that allow for persistent board presence at a significant cost to the player's life total, reflecting the high-stakes risk inherent in the set's design philosophy.
