Where it came from
Cut of the Profits was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and organized crime tropes, centering on a metropolis run by five demon-led crime families. This card specifically represents the cynical, transactional nature of the Maestros, a family of vampire assassins obsessed with high culture and brutal efficiency.
The card was illustrated by artist Anna Christenson, who utilized the set's distinct noir-inspired visual language to depict a clandestine exchange. Its design focuses on the mechanic of sacrifice, requiring players to trade their own resources—specifically creatures—to draw cards, perfectly mirroring the set’s narrative theme of paying a steep personal cost to gain power within the city's hierarchy.
