Where it came from
Cut of the Profits was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. This set drew inspiration from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and noir storytelling, focusing on a city controlled by five warring crime families. The card mechanically reflects the set's central theme of sacrificing resources for power, serving as a card-draw engine that requires the player to expend life to gain an advantage.
The artwork for this particular promo version, numbered 72s, was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov. Velinov was tasked with capturing the opulent yet dangerous atmosphere of New Capenna, depicting a scene of illicit exchange that highlights the greed and systemic corruption central to the plane's lore. Upon release, the card was received as a functional staple for black-aligned Commander decks, noted for its balance of high-risk resource management and utility.
