Cyclopean Tomb

Released in 1993, the Limited Edition Beta set was the second printing of the Magic: The Gathering base set, serving as the first true white-bordered and black-bordered standard for the game's early identity. The Cyclopean Tomb was conceived as a rare artifact card, reflecting the game's initial focus on high-cost, high-impact spells that shifted the landscape of a match. It was designed during a period when the mechanics of the game were still being rapidly refined by Richard Garfield and the team at Wizards of the Coast, intended to provide players with a unique way to manipulate the battlefield by turning lands into swamps.

The artwork for the card was provided by Anson Maddocks, a foundational illustrator for the game whose style is characterized by a dark, visceral aesthetic that defined the atmosphere of the early expansions. Maddocks utilized a gritty, textured approach to depict the tomb, aiming to evoke a sense of ancient, decaying power that fit the card's function of corruption. Upon its release, the card was received as a curiosity for its niche mechanical application, eventually becoming a representative piece of the surreal and horror-inspired art direction that characterized the earliest years of the trading card game.
