Library of Leng

The Library of Leng was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993 for the debut of Magic: The Gathering, later appearing in the Limited Edition Beta set. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to provide a unique utility for players by allowing them to place discarded cards on top of their library instead of the graveyard, effectively protecting them from discard effects. It reflects the early, experimental design philosophy of the game, where artifacts often introduced unusual mechanical interactions that rewarded creative deck building.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Quinton Hoover. Known for his distinctive, flowing style and vibrant use of color, Hoover sought to capture a mystical, ancient atmosphere fitting the artifact's name. The illustration depicts an ethereal, open book set against a backdrop of swirling arcane energy, a visual choice that became iconic within the early aesthetic of the game. It was well-received by players for its imaginative depiction of magical knowledge and remains a notable example of the illustrative style that defined the first year of the game's production.
