Provenance

Where it came from

Cystbearer was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set marked the return of the fan-favorite Mirrodin plane, reintroducing the Phyrexian faction as a central antagonist. Within the game's lore, the card represents the invasive spread of the Phyrexian oil, illustrating the corruption of the native organic and mechanical life forms on the metal world.

The card's artwork, provided by illustrator Igor Kieryluk, leans into the visceral, biomechanical aesthetic defining the Phyrexians during this era. Designed as a common creature with the infect ability, its mechanical purpose was to provide a foundational piece for players building aggressive decks centered around poisoning opponents. Upon release, it was recognized by the community as a functional, if standard, utility creature for the infect archetype.
