Where it came from
Dark Tutelage was released in 2010 as part of the Magic 2011 core set, designed to provide a functional 'timeshifted' version of the classic card Dark Confidant. By moving the effect from a creature to an enchantment, the design team aimed to preserve the high-risk, high-reward mechanic of drawing extra cards at the cost of life, while allowing it to fit within the mechanical identity of the black color pie for a core set environment.
The card features artwork by Aleksi Briclot, who rendered the unsettling imagery of a shadowy mentor leaning over a student. Briclot's interpretation emphasizes the sinister nature of the 'tutelage'—a power that grants knowledge through suffering. Upon release, it was well-received by players looking for a budget-conscious alternative to more expensive black card-advantage engines, finding a dedicated home in casual formats and some niche competitive black-based control decks.
