Dark Tutelage

Dark Tutelage was originally introduced in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2011. As a design, it functions as a spiritual successor to the classic card Dark Confidant, tasking players with drawing an additional card each turn at the cost of life equal to that card's mana value. This mechanic emphasizes the high-risk, high-reward philosophy associated with black-aligned magic, forcing the player to balance card advantage against their own survival.

The Enchanting Tales variant included in the 2023 Wilds of Eldraine set features a stylized, fairy-tale inspired aesthetic that departs from the original art. This thematic redesign was intended to harmonize with the set's focus on Arthurian folklore and storybook motifs. The illustration, handled by the Magic art team to fit this specific aesthetic cycle, was received by players as a visually distinct collector's piece that maintains the original card's strategic identity while elevating its presentation to fit the set's unique narrative art style.
