Provenance

Where it came from

Darkwater Catacombs was originally released in the 2001 Odyssey expansion as part of a cycle of dual lands that tap for two specific colors or colorless mana. These lands were designed to support multicolored decks in a limited mana environment, offering a tactical compromise where players could access flexible utility at the cost of requiring an additional colorless mana source for colored activation.

This version, featuring illustration by Monte Michael Moore, was reprinted in the 2022 The Brothers' War Commander set. Moore’s work on this card depicts a grim, subterranean passage, leaning into the bleak, mechanical aesthetic established by the expansion's theme of the ancient conflict between Urza and Mishra. The card remains a functional staple in Commander formats for its ability to filter mana effectively in decks running black and blue.
