Where it came from
Daru Cavalier was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common white creature card, it was designed to showcase the new 'morph' mechanic, which allowed players to cast creatures face-down as 2/2 colorless spells for three mana. This set leaned heavily into tribal synergies, specifically emphasizing the Soldier creature type that the Daru Cavalier represents within the lore of the Otarian continent.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Carl Critchlow, whose work on the set captured the tactical, militaristic aesthetic of the Daru Encampment. Critchlow utilized a clean, structured style to depict the soldier in mid-action, aiming to balance the high-fantasy nature of the game with a grounded, infantry-focused design. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in Limited formats, where its combination of morph and a death-triggered ability provided reliable board presence.
