Mistform Wall

Mistform Wall was released in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering set Onslaught, a collection defined by its heavy emphasis on the 'tribal' mechanic. Within the set's narrative, the Mistform creatures were represented as shapeshifting entities created by the Riptide Project, a group of wizards on the continent of Otaria seeking to weaponize evolution. These creatures were designed to manipulate battlefield types, allowing players to shift their creature types dynamically to trigger various tribal synergies present in the Onslaught block.

The artwork was illustrated by Arnie Swekel, who provided a surreal, ethereal aesthetic that captured the creature's unstable, shifting form. The design reflects the 'Wall' subtype’s mechanical history, where creatures are typically static defenders, yet the Mistform design challenged this trope by allowing the card to adopt offensive or utility-based creature types. Upon its release, it was viewed primarily as a functional tool for Limited play and tribal-themed decks, appreciated for its versatility rather than high-tier competitive dominance.
