Where it came from
Daru Lancer was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Otaria, the expansion focused heavily on tribal themes and military conflict, introducing the Soldier creature type as a significant mechanic within white-aligned decks. The card reflects the set's broader narrative, which depicted a world embroiled in a long-standing war driven by the lingering influence of the Phyrexians and the emergence of new power-seeking factions.
The artwork for Daru Lancer was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational illustrator in the game's early history known for his distinct, expressive style. Tasked with visualizing the card's 'First Strike' ability, Rush depicted the Lancer in a dynamic, forward-leaning stance, emphasizing the reach and readiness of the soldier. Upon its release, the card became a reliable utility piece in Limited play, valued for its ability to dominate early-game combat exchanges through its defensive stats and keyword efficiency.
