Where it came from
This card, featuring David and Carol Marcus, was released as part of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture trading card series. Produced in 1979 by Topps, the set was designed to capitalize on the massive anticipation surrounding the franchise’s first transition from television to the big screen. The cards served as a primary marketing tool, allowing fans to collect character profiles and plot stills before the film’s release, establishing the lore for the next generation of Star Trek enthusiasts.
The imagery on this card reflects the clean, futuristic aesthetic of the 1979 production design, overseen by Harold Michelson and production designer Jerry Goldsmith's vision for the updated USS Enterprise. By highlighting characters like the Marcus family, the card provided viewers with context regarding the personal lives and scientific background of the Starfleet staff, contributing to a more grounded, humanized perspective within the series’ expansive science fiction narrative.
