Reckless Impulse

Reckless Impulse originated in the Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. The card was designed to support red-aligned aggressive strategies by allowing players to exile the top two cards of their library and play them until the end of their next turn. This effect, often colloquially termed impulse draw, serves as a staple mechanic for red decks, providing necessary card advantage while maintaining the color's thematic reliance on fleeting, high-risk momentum.

The artwork was illustrated by Simon Dominic, who leaned into the gothic, supernatural aesthetic prevalent in the Innistrad setting. The illustration depicts a moment of chaotic kinetic energy that fits the thematic framing of an impulsive act within a horror-themed plane. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a strong, efficient common that quickly became a core component in constructed formats, particularly in Pauper, where its ability to churn through a deck while managing limited resources is highly valued.
