Provenance

Where it came from

Death Cloud was originally printed in the 2004 set Mirrodin as a rare black sorcery designed to force a symmetrical resource collapse, requiring players to sacrifice lands, creatures, and discard cards based on the amount of mana spent. The card was designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team to provide a high-variance, powerful board-wiping effect that rewarded players for building decks specifically optimized to recover from the card's steep penalty.

The version from Modern Masters, released in 2013, features updated card frame technology while retaining the original, haunting illustration by Brom. In this reprint, the design intent remained focused on preserving the card's unique role as a 'reset button' in competitive formats, and it was generally well-received by players who appreciated the aesthetic consistency and the opportunity to acquire the card in a set designed for limited-format drafting.
