Syphon Life

Syphon Life was originally printed in the Scourge set in 2003, later appearing in the 2013 Modern Masters set as card number 100. The card represents the dark, parasitic magic of the Cabal, a powerful cult featured in the lore of the Otarian continent. Its design focuses on the mechanic of lifegain and recursion, allowing players to drain their opponents while bringing the spell back from the graveyard to be used again, reflecting the relentless and cyclical nature of the black-aligned magic it depicts.

The artwork for the Modern Masters reprint carries forward the aesthetic established in the Onslaught block, emphasizing the grim, shadowy visuals characteristic of the set's darker cards. By the time of the Modern Masters release, the card served as a staple for players drafting black-based control decks within the limited format. Its inclusion in this set was intended to provide a functional and thematic link to the graveyard-synergy themes that defined the environment, garnering a reputation among players for being a grinding, incremental value engine.
