Where it came from
Decoy Gambit was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, specifically featured within the 'Timeless Wisdom' preconstructed deck. This set was designed to coincide with the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion, focusing on themes of mutation and cyclical card draw mechanics. The card was crafted to support the commander Gavi, Nest Warden, functioning as a defensive maneuver that provides players with temporary protection while capitalizing on the set's cycling-oriented gameplay.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. His design choice for the piece centers on the visual manifestation of a decoy lure, utilizing the vibrant, monstrous visual language established for the Ikoria plane. Upon its release, the card was received as a situational but effective political tool in multiplayer Commander formats, valued primarily by players looking to mitigate combat damage while advancing their deck's specific cycling synergies.
