Where it came from
Decree of Annihilation was originally printed in the 2004 Scourge expansion, serving as a climactic conclusion to the Onslaught block's narrative. The card reflects the apocalyptic conclusion of the storyline, where the character Karona is destroyed, effectively resetting the magical landscape. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast team, the card was intended to function as a definitive board wipe, removing nearly all permanent types from play to reflect the catastrophic lore event.
The art was commissioned from illustrator Arnie Swekel, who sought to capture the sheer scale of the magical cataclysm described in the set's narrative. The card is noted for its high mana cost and its ability to drastically alter the state of a game, making it a polarizing but iconic piece among casual Commander players. Its appearance in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs, ensures its continued presence in the secondary market.
