Deepfathom Skulker

Deepfathom Skulker was released in early 2016 as part of the promotional suite for the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Oath of the Gatewatch. This card was distributed primarily through Friday Night Magic events, a longstanding organized play program designed to foster local community engagement at hobby stores. By offering exclusive, foil-treated versions of cards with unique artwork, Wizards of the Coast aimed to incentivize regular tournament attendance and reward long-term players within the game's ecosystem.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Slawomir Maniak, who rendered the creature in a style consistent with the Eldrazi faction—otherworldly, color-shifted entities central to the set's narrative of cosmic horror. Maniak’s design focuses on the creature’s unsettling, alien physiology, utilizing a palette that emphasizes the purple and translucent aesthetic associated with the Eldrazi brood. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece in limited formats, though its primary value to collectors remains tied to its distinct promotional foil treatment and the specific window of its availability during the winter of 2016.
