Where it came from
Dimensional Infiltrator was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This specific version is a promotional card distributed through the Friday Night Magic program, a long-standing initiative by Wizards of the Coast designed to encourage local game store play by offering alternate-art or foil-treated cards as prizes for participants.
The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, who depicted the creature—an Eldrazi drone—as a translucent, shifting entity to reflect its unique gameplay ability to return to its owner's hand. The design utilizes the distinctive colorless Eldrazi aesthetic established during the Battle for Zendikar block, which emphasized alien, uncanny anatomy and ethereal textures. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to the growing visual lore of the Eldrazi invasion of the Zendikar plane.
