Defiant Strike

Defiant Strike was originally printed as a common card in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. Designed for the game's high-speed, planeswalker-focused narrative, the card reflects the desperate military efforts of the Gatewatch and their allies to repel Nicol Bolas from the plane of Ravnica. The card illustrates a moment of tactical clarity amidst the chaotic destruction of the invasion.

The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, who captures the ethereal, glowing energy of a strike focused through pure willpower. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various formats, particularly in aggressive decks that rely on cantrips—spells that replace themselves by drawing a card—to maintain pressure while cycling through a deck. Its inclusion in 'The List,' a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs, ensures its continued presence in the game’s ecosystem.
