Where it came from
Defiant Strike was released in 2019 as part of the War of the Spark set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Within the narrative of the set, the card depicts the culmination of the war on the plane of Ravnica, where the combined forces of the Gatewatch and local guilds mount a desperate defense against the planeswalker Nicol Bolas. Mechanically, the card serves as a versatile cantrip that provides a power boost to a creature while allowing the player to draw a card, reflecting the tactical utility of organized resistance in battle.
The artwork for this specific iteration was illustrated by Johannes Voss. Voss focused on a dynamic, heroic perspective that emphasizes the collective effort of the diverse inhabitants of Ravnica standing together. The piece was well-received by players for its clean composition and ability to capture the high-stakes, cinematic tone that Wizards of the Coast sought to establish for the War of the Spark expansion, which served as the conclusion to a multi-year story arc.
